The Monthly Extravaganza of the Summer, the Downtown Flea, is back this Saturday (August 17) at the Canton Cultural Center for the Arts. From 10am to 3pm, you can shop over 70 local vendors. Stop in for brilliant handmade and vintage items as well as delicious food vendors.
The event itself is FREE and you can easily find parking on side streets nearby or downtown at meters or local parking lots. Parking at the Cultural Center is $6.
To help you limber up for walking around the Flea, you can stop in at 9am for FREE YOGA with 6th Street Yoga in the grass around the Center.
From 11am to 2pm, enjoy the musical stylings of Steve Farley and Patrick Masalko as well as FREE kids' face painting. While the kids are getting their faces painted, their parents can check out the indoor Flea Bar.
After the event, stop in at George's Lounge for the Official After-Party Burger Bar. The Flea Welcome Table will have a special discount coupon so you can pick up succulent burgers and craft cocktails at George's.
With apologies to Billy Mays (RIP), BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE!
From 8am to 11am, you can stop at the Canton Farmer's Market at 4th and McKinley in the Timken parking lot. Stop in for local items from over 15 vendors, including produce, meats and even dog treats!
Don't forget about the numerous other boutiques and businesses excited to meet you in the Downtown Canton area! Check out the business directory at www.DowntownCanton.com.
All of this AND the Canton Music Block in the late afternoon and evening are coordinated by Saturdays in the City, sponsored by: Special Improvement District of Downtown Canton; the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce; ArtsinStark; Visit Canton; and the Canton Repository.
Canton is such a beautiful city, it would be a shame if you didn't explore a bit before you moved here. BIKESMART is a perfect way to do just that without having to pay to park, then move your car, then pay to park again, etc.
Quite simply, BikeSmart, is the Stark County Bike Share program. This allows you to stop by any of the Stark County Zagster bike share locations and rent a bike.
The Zagster App is easy to use! All you'll need to do is enter the bike's number into the app, enter the unlock code into the on-bike keypad, remove the cable and enjoy your ride!
The city looks brilliant up close and personal and this mode will allow you the opportunity to stop and "smell the roses" a bit. The number of trails that go through and around Canton are astounding. With some creative meandering you can get from Veteran's Park all the way downtown quickly and easily and see not only the extensive trails, but the beautiful classic buildings and the new developments.
When you're finished with the bike, you can drop it off at any Stark County Zagster docking locations, "Lock" it, place the docking cable into the station port and "End Ride."
Even if you don't have a smartphone you can get instructions on how to ride by text message.
For more information and a list of all of the BikeSmart locations, visit: https://starklibrary.org/home/services/bikesmart/
As I am a resident of Canton, I did some research recently into the etymology of the name Canton.
I thought maybe it was named after someone with the name Canton. Turns out, the origin is much different! In 1805, Canton was first founded by Bezaleel Wells, a surveyor, hailing from Steubenville, Ohio. He named our beloved city out of respect for trader John O'Donnell. O'Donnell was the first to ship goods from Canton, China to Baltimore, Maryland. He even called his property in Baltimore, "The Canton Estates."
Guangzhou, China was called by the Portugese "Cidade de Cantão" which the English ended up pronouncing as Canton. This anglicization was familiar to the English as "canton" is a division of a political unit, formerly for coats of arms and more recently in a geographic sense.
Canton got a slow start at first. In the 1820s, residents of Canton refused both the Ohio and Erie Canals coming through the city, thinking disease would follow. Ironically enough, the canals improved the health in Massillon. The Cleveland and Pittsburgh Railroad offered to build a track through Canton, but only if the residents would offer ten thousand dollars for the construction. The residents thought they would build the tracks anyway and refused. The railroad built their line east of Canton and to the benefit of Alliance instead.
Canton finally came into its own by 1838 when it was incorporated and became a booming agricultural and industrial center because of the Civil War. Between 1880 and 1890 the population of Canton doubled.
And this was just the beginning. The story of Canton is growing every day and we at Hackenberg Realty will keep offering up tidbits every week for your enjoyment and to stoke your Canton Pride!
